Heinrich Meyring
Ecstasy of St. Teresa
1697
Church of the Scalzi, Venice
This sculpture of the "transverberation" owes much to
Bernini's of fifty years earlier, but it is somewhat more decorous. The saint's face expresses a meditative calm rather than emotional intensity and her garments are less rumpled. Meyring's angel delicately touches her habit whereas Bernini's holds his arm back in preparation for a deep thrust.
